WEEK 3 "B" BLOG

In one of his first acts as president, Barack Obama signed legislation to close the prison at the Guantanamo Bay military base in Cuba. It has since been reported that President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela wants the U.S. to turn it all back over to the Cubans. Should we turn "Gitmo" back over to Cuba, or is it worth the time, effort, money, etc. to maintain a military presence in this still communist country? (DUE 2/3)

  1. I think the United States has an obligation to maintain a military presence on the island. Having a military base in the middle of the Carribbean not only protects vital shipping lanes, but it discourages Cuba from acting rashly.

  2. I think if we hand it over to the Cubians, it would go out of control. We have maintained it before and I think the Cubians might not want to woory about it.

  3. I don't think our military presence in Cuba is necessary in Cuba. After everything we put into it, the time, money, effort, etc. we hardly get anything out of it. It's not worth it to keep a military base there when after so many years, it's hardly done any good when Cuba is still a communist country.

  4. I don't think its worth our time, money, effort, etc to keep a military presence in Cuba. I don't think its necessary because we don't get a whole lot out of it, so were spending all that time, money, effort, etc. really for nothing. And our economy isn't in the right spot to be spending money if we really don't need to.

  5. I don't think that we should waste our time trying to keep it open. There are plenty of high security prisions here in America. The money that it takes to run that place could be used somewhere else. As for giving it back to Cuba, I really don't see any advantages of it for us, so I say no to that to.

  6. I do not believe we should close down the military base completely. I believe this because before the Afghan. and Iraqi war, it was just a military base. After 9 years of it being also a military prison, it should be reformed back. However, not completely closing it, I believe it should be cut down in size. We should not listen to anything Chavez has to say, he should mean nothing to us. Its what the US wants to do, that is most important.

  7. I think that we still need to maintain control over the area. If we give up control, the Cubans may take advantage of their new found power. It is best just to leave things as they are since that is how they have worked in the past.

  8. I believe the United States needs to keep the military presence on this island. It is necessary to keep it open because we have already invested all that money to maintain the place. If we let it go, some other country will benefit from it. Why give it up with all the time, money and effort we've put in it? It would be a misfortune for the United States to let it go.

  9. We should maintain a military presence in Cuba. Even after we shut down Gitmo, we would still need to work for democracy in Cuba. The last thing we need to do is to take Chavez's advice.

  10. I think we should shut it down. Its a waste of money and time to maintain it. We have many top security prisons here. We shouldnt give it back to Cuba who knows what Chavez will do with this new power

  11. I think we should give the Guantanamo Bay military base back to Cubans. The base is a waste of money that the United States doesn’t have. It doesn’t seem to have that big of a purpose for the US. I think we should give it back to them, so we can use our time, effort, and money on other important things.

  12. I think that guantanomo bay should be given back to the cubans. It is unnecessary to keep because there will be no purpose for it and will just waste federal money.

  13. I believe we should hand over Guantanomo Bay back to the Cubans. Yes it would be extremely vital towards our military presence in the world, but it's not worth the time, money, or our effort. The Cubans should have to sort their problems with their security on their own island. Considering we have enough on our plate as it is.

  14. I think we should not mess with it. It is a waste of our money and we have no use for it anymore. I also don't think we should give it back to Cuba because we do not know what they will do with it.

  15. We should keep Gitmo it is a key to keeping our presence in the still communist Cuba. It is important to keep Gitmo because of jhow close Cuba is to the U.S. because if we give up our base in Cuba then terrorist could base in Cuba and attack from such a close place.

  16. I believe that we should do whatever we can in order to keep the prison. I do not feel that it would be wise to bring some of those terrorists into the United States. If we close down Guantanamo Bay, the prisoners will simply be deported back to thier countries and end up right where they left off which is strategizing to kill Americans.

  17. I think we should give the base back to Cuba. Its not worth it for us to keep it, they might as well have it if they want it. Whatever effort we put into the base, it wont do Cuba any good. Therefore, we should not put anymore time or money into the base. Give it back to Cuba.

  18. If the country has tried to make turns for the better then I say we should leave Cuba. But, on the other hand, if they have made choices for the worst then I say we should still keep a military base in Cuba.

  19. I think we should give the base back. It's too much money, time, and effort. We need to focus on more important things. We have enough to deal with without worrying about the prison on top of it all.

  20. I think that we should maintain our presence there. In the future they may decide to use it as a prison again. They would need the space. I think it would just help us in the long run to stay and maintain it. Since Cuba is still communist I think that it is a good idea.

  21. I think we need to retain Gitmo. Our bases around the world are important to us. we must also realize that we need to keep this base to keep in touch with cuba if we do not have it we could get shut out of Cuba for a very long time.

  22. I think that we should keep Guantanamo Bay opened as a military base for the United States. With Cuba still being a communist country, it's important that we have a base of attack if a conflict arises with the country.

  23. I think we should take it back over, gives them a chance to develop something new we might not know, that might destroy us, if we have the base a can keep a closer eye out.

  24. Keep in mind that we're in a post cold war society. Our greatest threat isn't communism, our greatest threat is this onslaught of technology being distributed to all corners of the globe. The red scare isn't all that scary anymore, and the sooner we stop wasting our time and money on "fighting communism," the sooner we can get back to protecting the prosperity of our nation from other, more direct threats.

  25. i think that it is very valuble to keep getmo in cuba because they are turning towards comunism in a hurry. if we keep it we have a base there that we can fight from. i also believe that cuba is just trying to get us out of their land and out of their way so that they can go about their plans to do what they want to do and not worry about the us invovment.
