WEEK 2 "B" BLOG

This past week, Covenant School's (Tx.) girls basketball team defeated Dallas Academy 100-0. Because of this, they are petitioning the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools to allow them to forfeit. In October in Florida, Naples High School's football team defeated Estero High School 91-0. The same weekend in Ohio, Beechcroft High School beat Centennial High School 96-0. During their 2007 undefeated regular season, the New England Patriots defeated their opponents by an average of nearly 20 points per game, while routinely leaving their starters in until the closing minutes of the game. Your question, do teams / coaches have an obligation to prevent things like this from happening (AKA competing in a way that promotes sportmanship) or should teams simply play the game as the rules of competition dictate (AKA score as many points as possible)? 1. I think that teams need to play to win. But once you reach a certain point in a game when there is no possible way for the other team to come back and win then you should not try to run up the score. The teams that are winning need to put in their backups and try to run as much time off the clock without scoring.

  2. I agree with Greg. There is no honor in defeating a team 100-0. Once a coach realizes there is no way the other team is going to win, the coach should send in the backup players and let up. Coaches should promote good sportsmanship and set a good example for the players.

  3. I think that teams should be allowed to play as hard as they can. However, when a score gets too high, I think that they should back down. Once you get past a certain point, it is no longer about good sportmanship and having fun. Instead it becomes about showing the other team off, and that's not right.

  4. I agree with everyone who has wrote before me. A 100-0 win isn't necessary. A game should be about having fun, and when once the game reaches a certian number of points that the other team has no chance, they should backdown. This would show good sportsman ship for the players.

  5. In my opion you don't need to win by 100 points to call your self a winner. It shows your lack of sportsman ship and its kind of like slapping the other team in the face. Now if that team did all it could to show some sportsman ship and still won by a big number than that is ok with me.

  6. I think once you get so high up in points there really isn't a point in playing. The losing team should have an option of forfeiting because there really isn't a chance of winning.

  7. I think teams should just play. In all aspects of life there are going to be people that are better at certain things than other people. And nothing in life is sugar coated. Teams need to learn to accept defeat as graciously as they are willing to accept victory.

  8. Along with everyone else, I believe beating a team by an excess amount is unnecessary. It looks bad on the coaches and puts bad impressions on the players. Sports are supposed to be fun and enjoyable everyone. There is no dignity in mocking a team for one’s own amusement.

  9. I think you should play the sport and let it go as it is. Don't put a restriction on it. If we are beating Cathedral 21-0 in the first quarter, why stop? If your team can't win, that's their fault. Play game and don't hold back.

  10. No, there shouldn't be limits on scores but its embarassing how teams got beat by 100-0, and stuff like that think the people are selfish for scoring that many to keep thier stats up.

  11. I think that you should play the game to win, but when it gets to a certain score to where your a head by a lot, maybe you should take out some of you starters or your better players. I think that when your beating a team by a lot of points you should ease up a little so the other team doesnt start to feel bad.

  12. A win is a win. Whether it is by one or onehundred, a tean will get beat. It is a loss on their record and there should be no arguing about it. If a team enters a game with an extremely less athletic players then the other team they should expect to lose by a lot. There should be no pitty for those who set themselves up for failure.

  13. Once a team is up by an excessive amount, I think they should back off and not try to rack the score up even more. It is good sportsmanship to let the other team have a chance to get some points. I think the team should have slacked off, but not let the other team notice because that also isn’t good sportsmanship.

  14. When coaches encourage their players to absolutely slaughter another team, that shows an intense greed and lack of sportmanship on the coaches' part. It's pretty unbelieveable that the coach wouldn't put in his second or third string players and lighten up a little bit. I understand the reason for the 25 run rule in CYO Kickball now..

  15. I think that teams and coaches should show sportsmanship during and after games. Once you get up by so many points you should put in some younger players so they get some game time experience. There is no sense in beating a team by 100, 91, 96 or any other ridiculously high number. Once you get up by 50 points you should either call the game or set your starters down.

  16. I think you just need to play the game. If kids take it personal that's their own fault. They need to know that it is just a game and if it really matters that much too them maybe they shouldnt be playing. You play to do your best always .

  17. Every team plays to win regardless of the athleticism of their opponent, but I do agree with the lack of sportsmanship Covenant School's basketball team has. If the opponents score remains at 0 majority of the game, you should think about giving everyone on the team a chance to play and give them a little slack on defense.

  18. You play the game to win. When your ahead by so much that the liklyhood that you'll lose the game is likly none. It is your job as hte coach to keep the game as fare to all athletes.

  19. I believe that every team should enter the game with the intention to win but they should do it at a respectable level. When the game seems to be in your hands I think that you should call of the dogs and not humiliate the other team. Blowing out teams 100-0 does not show good sportsmanship and is not fair to the other players.

  20. I think coaches and teams have an obligation to reflect the way in which the game was intended to play. It is their duty to have an unmentioned respect for the game and their opponents. While the goal is to win, one must do so with pride and dignity. A sportsmanship must be carried by the coaches and athletes so that the name of the game is not disgraced.

  21. When your team wins by 100 points, its rubbing it in the other team's faces that your better that them. If the other team has a learning disability than you should take it easy on them or not play them at all.

  22. I think it doesn't matter how many points you score. Its a game and the point of a game is to win. You should not be restricted from the amount of points you are aloud to score.

  23. I believe that you should play the game with the intention to win, but to a certain extent. Running up the score by an excessive amount proves nothing but bad sportsmanship and unfairness to the other players. There is no reason to run the score up. Once you realize you have won and the other team isn't going to come back, it is the right thing to send backup players in or let up a little.

  24. At a certain point you have to wonder what the parents were thinking in the stands. I would imagine that if I were a parent, I would've said something to the coach at halftime if it appeared he need to apply the brakes a little. It's irresponsible to run up the score, but I also think that they shouldn't showboat by just messing around.

What happened to the mercy rule?

  25. i think that after they started beating them by that bad they should have eased up and let the other team get some points and then it would be fair but that is just having a kind bone in your body and caring about others but if you look around that doesnt happed very often. people just need to start thinking about others.
