WEEK 7A BLOG

The Republican governor's of several states (Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alaska, South Carolina, Idaho) have stated that they are considering rejecting at least some of the monies granted to their states through the new economic stimulus package.

Do you see this as simple political maneuvering (putting political ideology ahead of the needs of the citizens) or is this a matter of trying to make responsible choices as the leaders of those repective states? (due 2/27)

  1. Some states may legitmately not need this government aid. However, some states, like Louisiana, it seems as if their governors are trying to make a political statement. It's more important to put the needs of the people in your state ahead of your selfish political agenda. It's sad, but it doesn't seem as if we have ANY straight politics... everyone's just worried about if they'll get re-elected or not.

  2. i think that this is a way of politics to put themselves in a better place. People right now need that money being put in to the economy. Especially those states that are struggling. It isnot right for the men doing this to be able to maneuver themselvesin such a way.

  3. I definently agree with clair at the fact that lousisiana is one of those political states making a political move. the state was just hit a major hurriane less than a couple years ago. there are homes there, even neighborhoods stillnot finished being rebuilt. Im sure that they could use the money.

  4. I think most of it is political stuff but if you get down to it every state can use a little help. I think that they should do it as an individual package. i know that that would take forever but it would be worth it. if you were to help by an individual bases it would be better for the economy too.

  5. i have to also agree with claire on this one it is a state thing some might not need it but some are just saying it to look like they are better off. i just see it as the leaders trying to look like they are ahead of the game. in all reality they are in the same spot.

  6. I agree with Chad, because he basically had the same exact view as I did. It's all a political game. Politicians need to get back to what's real, their constituents. As voters, we need to hold these people accountable, especially when we're struggling. Nations rise and fall together... it's everyone's problem.

  7. I believe with claire because the states are making a political move. They are making a statement. They dont support the stimulous package at all. The leaders of these states are putting political parties over the citizens.

  8. My opinion of this is that the states governors should accept it. They may not agree with it, but over 100,000 jobs have been lost in the last year. the economy needs the money. These leaders are doing this just to spite the president and his stimulus package. They need to look past it, and think of the good of the country and its citizens.

  9. If you've been paying attention, you know that all six of those states are hardcore red states. The only reason that this is happening is because the governers know that rejecting this stimulus would energize their base to fight against "big gov't." They weren't opposed to it when Bush did it, but now that there's a liberal in office, smart politics says deny, deny, deny.

  10. Claire, you're 100% right. Until these governers learn to drop their petty politics, their state will suffer. It's selfish and petty, but we all know that if it were John McCain proposing this, it would've been accepted by these states from the get go. As far as I'm concerned, it's their loss. Gov't can control a lot of things, but stupidity isn't one of them. If you want to deny your economy the chance to grow and "pick yourself up by your own bootstraps," have at it. All I ask is that these states don't whine in 2012 when their economy is still in the crapper, because unlike Monicagate, this one can't be blamed on the left-wing.

  11. I think the stimulus plan is a great idea for citizens especially with the bad economy. I just want to know their reasoning for refusing the plan. It seems like they don't want it because of the different political parties. That should not be the reason for rejecting it.

  12. I agree with Clair and Tim. They shouldn’t be discriminating because of different parties. They should set aside their disagreements for the good of the people. I think they should have a vote in the states so the people can get a choice. It really affects them the most.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think that it should depend on each state specific needs. Although some states may not need any help. Its not fair to give each state the same amount because not everystate needs it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree with katie. discriminating becuase of the different parties shouldnt be aloud. There should be a vote to see what the people really want. Its the only fair way to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think that it is all political. Its all about Republicans vs. Democrates.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree with Katie as well in these times fighting because of parties is unexceptable.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think this is merely political and selfish on the part of the governors. Some states, such as Louisiana which is still recovering from Hurricane Katrina, actually need the money. Governor Jindal of Louisiana needs to think about what is best for his constituents, especially since the GOP is eyeing him as their 2012 candidate.

  18. I agree with Kelsey on the fact that the amount of aid states receive should vary depending on the state of their economy, but she doesn't realize that it already is being dealt out that way. This is why California, which is in such dire need that people aren't going to receive their state tax returns until the state gets more money, is receiving billions more than Indiana which has lost many jobs but currently has a balanced budget.

  19. I think it's just political manuevering. Obviously there are people in those states who could benefit from the stimulus package. It wasn't passed for no reason. There are people out there suffering just because their Republican governors are too stubborn to give in.

  20. I think this is political maneuvering. ALl states need the money in some way, even if their goverment isnt suffering finanially as bad as others they have to be suffering enought in certain areas that they can benefit from. I believe this is very selfish and need to put the need of the citizens above themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree with Claire. There may be states out there that do not need the money, but I doubt it. However, it would be responsible of those states not to take the money that they do not need so that it could be given to those that do need it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree with Jenny that the amounts states recieve depends on their current economic situation. This way it will help our country as a whole to get better instead of helping certain states contintue to grow even more when other states are still suffering. I also think that the spending should have restrictions and make sure there will beneficial outcome.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I believe that it is irresponsible of them to go against their president. Weither they like it or not, he is the president and they need to follow what he says. You didn't see democrats not doing things when Bush was in office. They are acting childish and they need to just go along with it and then if it doesn't work, they have the right to say somethin, but until then they should just go with whhat he says.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with Jessica, ther are people in that state that could use that money, and they are stopping that. They are acting like they have there citizens best intrest at heart, but when really there are just acting foolish. Who cares if he is part of a different political party.

  25. Politics are hard thing to get into, I think that the governers should accept it. Boosting the economy is a big thing but turning it down is somewhat of a stupid mistake. They need to accept and go on with more jobs to get the econ. back up.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think that some of the states actually need this while others are just trying to put themselves in a better position. This is unfair to the citizens who really need this plan and could use it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with Jessica by stating that this is just political maneuvering. I agree that it is wrong to do this and leave the people out who are in great need of a plan like this in order to help them out.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with claire accept the money big the econ back up. Some states don;t need it but the should because they could need it later on.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I believe that it is political maneuvering. The whole United States is suffering at this time, while some states need more help than others, everyone needs help. The citizen’s needs should be above the political needs for reelection. They need to consider the things they are affecting before they make decisions.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with Austin, they should always back the president even if they aren’t for his political party. Everyone needs to work together to accomplish a goal. They cannot judge that it isn’t going to work, until they have tried it. People make mistakes all the time; you just have to adjust them to well fit everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I feel that this is mainly a political maneuver. These Republicans need to put party issues aside and do what is best for their state. If people need money, then they should accept it. However, if they do feel that they legitimately do not need the money and that other states would benefit from a greater allotment then this would be commendable. It all depends on the economic situation in each state.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with Chad that this money allotment should be done on an individual basis (at least by state anyway). If the majority of a state's citizens need money, then they should be forced to accept this money. It should be about the citizens, not the governor's opinion on whether or not a state needs money. In most cases, the governor is not the one hurting. The citizens are. Therefore, it should be the state's citizens that refuse the money not the governor.

  33. I think that it is more than political maneuvering. I think it was the Texas govenor who said he is worried it might commit them to something. They say that the plan may not work. If they don't think it will work then I think they are trying to help and protect their states.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with Ausitn they should back up the president. However if they really feel that the plan will hurt their states then they should do what they need to. They should not just be doing this as a political maneuver.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think that the decision by some governors to reject some of the monies granted to their states through the new economic stimulus package is primarily a political maneuver of party vs. party. As we found out in the Great Depression, what we need in order to get our economy out of a recession is more money boosted into it and the flow of money to start again. Right now, people are reluctant to spend money because the economy is diminishing, but in order to get out of this, they must spend money. The stimulus package will allow people to spend money once again and begin the constant flow. If the governors had the people's best interest in mind, they would be in favor of this stimulus package rather than rejecting it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with Kassie. Just because the governor of these states feels that they aren't in financial danger and don't need the money doesn't mean that citizens of their state aren't in trouble. Certain people may be suffering more than others, and it's not fair to those in need of the money to deny them their share. The governors should realize the needs of everyone and base their decision on that rather than only paying attention to a particular group.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think that the states governers should accept it. I think this because so many people have lost their jobs in the past year or two and the economy is getting so bad. We are needing the money about now. And some states are struggling more than others are so they need the most help.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree with Mallory. After going through the Great Depression, we should know what to expect and what things we needed to do different or change. And right now we should be spending money in order to get the economy flowing again.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I believe that some states need the money. I do not understand as to why they would reject such a grateful offer. Some of the Southern states that need money to help with their disaster relief should take. No state is perfect. I think they should take the money and spend it wisely.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I disagree with Greg. I think they all could use the money. Spend it on something that needs to be fixed. There are so many things they can use the money on to do good to the state.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think that by not accepting this money to boost THEIR state's economy is plain stupid. The govenors should actually start listening to the demanding needs of the people in their state and grant them this opportunity to help get their lives back on track. There is no reason on why not to accept this money that will change so many things in their state.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with Mallory and Anna, by going through the hard times of the Great Depression, we know exactly what to expect. We know what we must to inorder to revitalize this economy, and I'm not sure why the govenors are not allowing this new money to be spent. Do they not want to see change happen in their troubled states?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think it is just another political move against obama. I think they should put away any political issues and focus on the people. Louisiana definitely should take the money because of the devastation still left by Katrina. If anyone they need it most.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I definitely agree with tim. The republican states need to put aside their political views and do what's best for their state. Holding grudges will not solve anything at all. In order to get things done they must work together.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think that they should put their citizens first and accept it. They are in charge of taking care of their citizens and by not accepting it they are only hurting. If you want to make a political statement do it somewhere that dosen't effect everyone of your citizens your suppose to be serving.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree with hallie they need to worry about their citizens. You should listen to what the people want and not try to make a statement. you must serve the people

    ReplyDelete
  47. Their citizen's needs come first. If the citizens say that they need the money then accept the money. If they say they don't need the money then reject the money. Don't say no right away; wait awhile and see what your state citizens have to say about it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree with Tim because when Bush was in they didn't deny but now they are denying. I say to just accept the money and move on.
