WEEK 6A BLOG
Over the weekend, police in Connecticut had to shoot and kill a 175 pound pet chimpanzee who attacked a woman visiting it's owner's home. Should people be allowed to own exotic pets such as this, or should it be illegal everywhere? (due 2/20)
I believe that certain requirements should be made to own such animals. I dont think it should be outlawed because people try to find friends or company if you will. I think people should be allowed to have pets, but must have cages or permits or something in which makes it safer for you and people around you.
I think that people should be allowed to own exotic animals. However, they must maintain a certain level of responsibility for these animals. The woman gave her chimpanzee tea laced with Xanax so that it would calm down.. Does she not realize that Xanax, in some humans, makes the irritational and angry? What did she think a 200 lb chimp was going to do? She was irresponsible with her exotic animal, and now she's giving people who can actually care and provide for their animals a bad reputation. Roy Boy, a tattoo artist from Gary, has 2 white tigers. The man drives the tigers around in cages in the back of his truck. He's had these tigers for at least 10 years and has never had a problem with them before... So obviously some people can take care of their pets, and some cannot.
I agree with Kirkoff, these owners should have to have specific permits to own and care for these animals, because obviously, they are not tame. It should not be illegal to own them though.
I believe that people should be able to own certain exotic animals. I think that an animal's size and power should be one factor in whether or not that animal should be able to be owned by a person rather than a zoo. However, if an animal is raised from birth to be tame and live with a person, then there is a good chance that that animal would not act up. If it did, it should be removed immediately to make sure no one got hurt.
I agree with Claire. I think it all depends on the person, not the animal. There is always that risk that an animal will act up, but some people are better suited to deal with those situations than others.
I agree with Claire there are people who own animals like these and have no problems with them so it is all about how you treat them and how responsable you are with these animals.
I think that people should have the opportunity to own exotic animals, but along with that comes a huge list of responsibilities. You need to follow the requirements and guidelines inorder to maintain these animals to prevent these attacks from even occuring. It should be a wake up call for these owners and future owners of exotic animals that they are in fact wild and far from ever being human.
I agree with Claire that they should not outlaw the ownership of these animals. With the accurate permits and essential needs of the exotic animals taken care of, should anyone even be allowed to think of taking these animals home.
I think there should be a list of animals we are allowed to have.I believe there are certian pets that should be in a household like dogs, cats, fish, birds. These are all common pets that dont have any realy dange to people. There are also rules that dogs must be kept on a leash when outstide, or fenced in. There are no laws that say "keep your chimpanzee in a cage." It is dangerous to have exotic animals because they could be tempermental and they arent ment for a family enviroment.
In response to Jessica Brigmand. If we waited for every exotic animal that someone owns to "act up," this is a huge risk to the people living around the animal. Even if you tame an animal from birth, there is no controlling a wild animal. Claire said that a man had tigers in his truck, what if he crashed when they were in there and they hurt paramedics? What is the stopping point before this gets too far. In the long run exotic animals are unpredictable, so why should we even give them a chance without a safe controlled enviroment like the zoo. Its too risky for them to be in a household.
It is any persons chice to own whatever pet they want to own. There should not be a law saying that you can not own a tiger or something. people live with big animals all the time. But they do take a bigger a risk when doing this. But that is there choice not anyone elses.
I agree with claire that what was this women thinking a 200 lb chimp would do if she made it mad. There should be no reason to outlaw owning an animal but if permits were required that could be a helpful thing as well.
I think that if it is a threat to others then no. Chimpanzees could hurt or kill someone. If the animal had gotten loose and attacked someone it might have killed them. People need to use common sense and see that some animals are not pets that you can have living in your house.
I do not agree with Derek. They are taking a huge risk. If the animal were to get on the loose and attack a little kid it would probably kill them. They can not be taking that kind of risk with other people around. They should make laws that prohibit certain animals as being pets.
I think that if you are going to own such pets then you better have a lot of land to keep the pets and community safe. You also should have fences of some sort because exotic animals can turn on you in seconds. People who own these "pets" should realize the potential danger they are putting themselves and the community in.
I think people should be allowed to own exotic animals. It is a freedom and this is america. People have a right to own such pets. However they should be able to keep a level of responsability if they prove for some reason that they can not be responsabile they should be stripped of the right to have an exotic pet.
i disagree with greg. Poeple should be allowed to own exotic pets because it is a choice. There are dogs that attack all the time but there is no rule against that. If someone owns a exotic animal and can prove that they can control it and take care of it then they should be allwoed to do so.
Well i think you can you just need a permit to be allowed. If it attcks some one and hurts or kills they should get fined or get charged for murder. An animal such as an elephant goes a little to far, but if know how to take care and if you have a permit you should be allowed to have an exotic pet.
I agree with Derek, you should be allowed to have pets, but big anilmals like rhinos, elephants, and lions. Lions would be going over the edge because they are naturally visious. But i think you are aloud to own animal as long as you can take proper care for the animal.
This wouldn't be an issue at all if it were a dog that attacked her, but because it's a chimp people are making it a big deal. It's not so much that the animal is the problem as the owner, but the only way to prevent it is to stop making distinctions between animals and just require a permit for all animal ownership. Is it just me, or does that sound a little insane?
Kelsey, why is it that you think that chimps are any more dangerous than dogs? Dogs maul people all the time, and yet we don't outlaw them. We do need to enforce leash laws and whatnot so that people are at less of a danger, but there's no such thing as a world where pet's WON'T pose danger to humans. As a matter of fact, I'd outlaw dogs before I'd outlaw chimps based on the number of attacks annually in America.
I think that people should be allowed to own exotic animals. Many animals that are claimed to be exotic are capable of being very well trained and tamed. What makes an animal exoctic anyway? I'm sure that some people from different countries think of cats and dogs as being exotic. However, that doesn't keep Americans from owning them.
I disagree with Kelsey. I think that some dogs can be just as dangerous as exotic animals. Dogs are in the news all the time for attacking people, especially young and innocent children. Policeman too have to shoot dogs all the time just before they attack. If you say that exotic animals are dangerous, then you must claim too that dogs are dangerous which means they too should be on the list of outlawed animals. And good luck with that because I don't see man giving up its "best friend" just like that.

I agree with Pat. There are many people out there who aren't married and are lonely because of that and like to have pets around to keep them company all the time. Yet, I think that those people should still have permits and things to be able to own animals like this.
I think that having exotic animals should not be allowed. This is not the first time that something like this has happened. I think that we should leave those kind of animals in the wild. They are called exotic for a reason. Leave those animals in the Jungle.
I disagree with Briana. I dont think having these wild animals should be allowed. If you want to have one you can go live in the jungle. I do not think that it is safe or proper to have crazy animals around. Something bad always happens when we let people do these kinds of things.
I think that if people can control their exotic animals than they should be able to keep them. They should be required to produce a living enviornment that is both natural for the animal and secure, so the animal can't escape and harm others. There should be a registration for owning exotic animals so people who are unfit to own them are not able to.
I think that it should be illegal to own a pet like a monkey or any other type of animal thats not commonly found in a household. Yes people argue that these animals are raised to be nice and not attack humans but yet we still hear stories about animals attacking humans. These animals rather be out in the wild anyways, not in some house. The only way to prevent an animal from not attacking a human is to not even own a wierd animal like a monkey.
I agree with Briana. We shouldn't let our society's view on what is or isn't exotic inhibit whether or not we have a certain type of pet. In some countries a pet monkey may be considered normal so why not here?
In response to Jenny, I agree with you to some degree, but there always is a chance that, that animal will ecscape and end up harming a human. You can't control the way an animal will react when it is surprised. The best way to go is to just not own an animal like that and stick to something more traditional like a dog or a cat.
I dont think it is necessary to own such a big animal that could harm other people. Animals are wild and you never predict what they will do. People with no experience in handling such exotic animals could end up harming other people.
I agree with Austin, exotic animals have special needs and cannot be taken care of unexperienced owners. Animals are meant to be free and live in the wild not to be cooped up in a persons home. Letting people own exoitc animals could harm the life of a another person.
I think that they should be allowed to have such pet. The owner’s should have to have them in cages and or some kind of closed off area. I think that you should be allowed to own any kind of pet you want it should just be handled in different ways. Like if you have a gorilla you should have to have it in a very secure place. I think that if you want to own a pet like that your should have to prove that you can keep it somewhere safe.
I have to disagree with Blake because people have all kinds of wild pets. Ya they are dangerous but some people like to live on the edge. If you are going to someone’s house you should know what kind of pets they have and if you are scared of them you should not go it the owners choice what kind of pet they have.
I think people shouldn’t be able to have exotic pets. People should be able to have whatever pets they want to, but ones you buy at the pet store not ones out of the wild. I think exotic pets are too hard to keep it calm and contained. They should be able to let it run freely and live in normal environment, not take them out of it to live in their home.
In reply to Jenny, I think a person cannot control an animal. They may seem controlled, but certain things happen and make them go crazy and lash out on people. I think people trying to register and tame exotic animals is just a bad idea, because they have a mind of their own and are going to react however they want to.
I think people should be allowed to own exotic pets, but make them have a license which requires them to have a tranquilizer gun with them at all times.
I agree with Chad. If you really want to have an exotic pet, then you have to show that you're responsible and have the proper equipment. They should be caged when people come over for their safety.
I think it should be illegal to own exotic pets. The risks for having these pets are much higher than normal house pets. Usually these animals are much stronger and capable of doing more damage. Also these pets are used to the wild and can return to their instincts easily if something goes wrong.
I agree with Brittany. All pets owned should be bought from a pet store or another approved organzation. This will eliminate the possibility have having an exotic pet and will reduce the acidents that are caused because of them.
I think that having exotic pets should not be permitted. I believe this because it can be dangerous not only to that person but also to everyone around the person who has that pet. In order to keep the public safe I think that this should be illegal everywhere. If you want to see an exotic pet simply go to the zoo.
I have to agree with Stasik on the issue. I dont see how it would be possible to have such a pet in your house and still be able to live properly. The animal is meant to be in the wild and is not meant to be living in someones home.

These certain animals are not meant to be contained or treated as household pets. I believe that it should be illegal for people to own these animals. They are unpredictable, and can cause more damage than necessary.
I disagree with Claire. I don't believe that the animal's behavior is solely based on the responsibility of the human. Just because you're responsible doesn't mean that you can control what the animal is going to do. Yes, they can be stable for 10 years, but what happens when one day somebody makes them mad and they lash out. These animals are constantly putting someone in danger, whether we know it or not. Whether someone can take care of their pet or not doesn't determine the effect it's going to have on society.
I agree with Elias. Exotic animals are wild animals and you will never be able to predict what one will do. If you are going to own an exotic animal then you should be in touch with a professional zookeeper, or someone of that kind of profession, and report its behavior to them.
