WEEK 4A BLOG

Late last week, President Obama signed a bill that included a provision aimed at encouraging the public to "buy American." This has been met by some anger amongst our primary trading partners because the thought is that if the government urges us to specifically buy American goods, it takes away from the products that might be sold by those other countries. During these difficult economic times, is this a good idea or do you think that it could be a negative thing? What might be the differences in the short term and in the long run? (DUE 2/5)

  1. Yes, I think it could be a negative thing because we aren't the only country with a bad economy. Other countries have had bad economies for years and if we don't buy their goods then we worsen their economy. The thing is we have to spend our money wisely. If we don't buy from some countries they may take it negatively and from then on never like the U.S.A. again. If we buy from those countries then they are going to like us a be willing to help us when we get into a predicament.

  2. I think that at the moment encouraging Americans to buy American is a good thing. With an economny in recession, people are more inclined to buy a product if they feel they are helping their country in its time of need, when consumer spending is considerably down, rather than buy a product which benefits its foreign maker. However, in the long run this would hurt America.

  3. I think instead of forcing people to buy American goods, the american companies should make there products better. This way people still have a choice of foreign goods. The economy is bad, but can be fixed if American companies make wise decisions and can match the foeign companies by making things that fit the consumer and the time being.

  4. I think that if it will help our economy then we should try to better our economy. I think that it will have some negative effects though. Our primary trading partners may become angry and not want to trade with us. That would not be so bad if it helps our economy. I think that we should still trade with some of these countries and buy their goods.

  5. I think that what Jenny said that it would better our economy to buy American products. However I think that we should still buy some products from foreign countries. We just can buy a ton of things from them. We do not want them to stop trading with us. We still would need to buy somethings from them.

  6. I think it is a very good idea. we must worry about ourselves first and take care of ourselves. in the long run people will get over it. If we do not fix ourselves now then we may not have a long run. We must do this to help our economy.

  7. In response to Kocher we need to encourage people to buy American products. When our economy strives we help other economies strive but if we go down then we will force others to go down as well. we must insure ourselves to be okay before we can help others.

  8. I think it is a good idea because it will help boost our economy. We need tyo do anything and everything we can to get ourselves out of this situation. If we keep giving money to other countries, it will hurt us. In the long run, it will benefit us. Then we can go back to foreign trade.

  9. On response to "buck money", I agree. We need to worry about our lives over our relationship with foreign countries. America fuels other places in the world, so we need to use that to fuel ourselves.

  11. I think what Greg said is true, if it will us help then why not? Also while we are doing this we must not forget about our foreign trading partners. I think if our trading partners get angry and don't want to trade with us then we will be in a bigger hole.

  12. i don't think that this is a good idea because when we starting buying goods that arent made in other countries, thoes countries are going to begin liking us less. Also when we would want to resume trading with them after the economy gets back up there will still be hard feelings about us not buying from them before.

  13. In response to bstasik29, I do not agree that not buying foreign goods is going to help us in the long run because. What will help us in the long run is building strong relationships with other countries. Thoes countries could have goods that we don't have, and we could need them someday, so we can't just cut them off completly.

  14. Having Americans people buy our cars will help us out. Our economy is struggling and we need to get out of our current situation. Buy cars from other countries won't help us. We need to help our economy before profiting other countries.

  15. In response to Greg Dant, i agree that we can still buy somethings from other countries. But it all we do is buy their products, that wont help out our economy. That will only help our trade. We need to focus on our economy and not worry about trade until it becomes a bigger issue.

  16. In response to Kocher, I do agree that other economies are struggling too, but I think we should focus on our own countries economy first. I believe that if we help our economy by buying American products, other countries will benefit in the long run.

  17. I think that this is a good idea because anything that can help stimulate the American economy is going to be good for the average American citizen. I think that the short term effects include an increase in the standard of living of the American people if American business gets back on its feet. However, a long term effect might be the hindrance of relationship between American and our foreign traders.

  18. I think that this is a good idea for now. By buying American, we would be putting money back into our own economy. Once we are back on our feet, we can resume trade with foreign companies. If we sink even deeper, we will most certainly not be able to buy from foreign countries for an even longer amount of time.

  19. In response to Kocher, I think that the United States needs to take care of its own problems before worrying about other country's problems. That is part of why we are in the economic crisis that we are in. You can only help those if you take care of yourself first.

  20. In response to Puckett, we cannot continue to buy products from foreign countries at the current rate. Obviously we can't quit altogether but lessening the amount spent abroad would focus American dollars on struggling companies at home.

  21. I think that we should encourage our own citizens to buy American in order to help our economy. We must focus on the concerns of our own country first before we decide to go elsewhere for goods. I think that by having Americans do this will boost our economy and help out with the recession that we are in.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree with Jenny in saying that continuing to buy foreign products at this rate will only hurt our economy even more. I also agree with the fact that we should not stop purchasing foreign goods all at once but rather try to lessen the amount that we spend on foreign goods.

  23. If buying American would better our economy, then yes I believe this would be a smart choice. By placing money back into our economy allows us to get back on our own two feet and resume buying and sharing goods with fellow countries.

  24. In response to Briana, I agree. With the increase of purchasing our own products, the standard of American living would increase rapidly. However, with the decline of refusing to buy other countries goods inorder to only benefit our country may cause problems in the future.

  25. I agree with Jenny and Mikey. We should buy American products, especially with the huge job losses that our country has sustained. If we start buying American products, then those company can gain more revenue to invest back into the jobs that they recently lost, and the commmunities that they live in.

    ReplyDelete
  26. We need should by american products, create the jobs we once lost. The companies need to invest in these deals create jobs and be on our way. Rebuild the economy.

  27. Buying from americans can only benefit our economy. This will help local and national business by encouraging the purchases of their protects. Some other countries may lose some money, but right now this is what the USA needs. It will only improve our economy.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think we should buy American goods; this would boost our economy and bring in jobs. Many people are going to tend to buy foreign products though, because these are cheaper. I think that if we only buy American made goods, prices of the goods will increase, because foreign products are cheaper, and we aren’t used to buying USA made products.

  29. In response to Hallie, I agree that it would be a smart choice to buy American made goods. I also agree that once we get buying American goods, then we will strengthen our economy and then we can help out other countries.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes I do think that this would be a negative thing. I think this because if the other countries that we trade with found out that we only bought things from our own country and none from any of theirs, that would most likely make them stop buying our products. This would greatly hurt our economy even more.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think that we should buy just American products so Americans get the profit. I think its a positive thing because America is getting the money not other countries. I think it would be good in the short term though but maybe not in the long term because prices might go up. Competition keeps prices down.

  32. I agree with Vince. This will help us not hurt us right now. This is a good thing.

  33. I think this is a good thing because it will help our econony. This will help us both long term and short term. Long term because we can be dependent on ourselves and not worry about future economic failures. It helps short term because it will help come out of the current problem giving more buinesses more buisness, and inturn, creating more jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I disagree with Brittany. I do not believe prices will increase. I believe buisness will become more stable. This allows the buisness to have decent and affordable prices.

  35. I beleive that the bill is good. It is good for the country because of the economic times. If the money is circulated through back to US americans then its more money to help us. This bill is actually in my opinion one of Obamas good decisions since he's been president.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think this is a positive thing because by primarily focusing on buying American products, our economy will boost. This will happen because jobs will be created for many more people and businesses will be on the rise again. In response to Jenny though, I agree that in the long run, it may hurt our trading with foreign nations.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This clearly contradicts any and all true faith Obama may have had in a true free market economy. While he has not put up walls, he has put up an electric fence and if there is one thing that the 21st century has evinced, it is that the nations that will be the most successfull are the nations who can integrate globalization the most efficiently into their economy and Obama shouldn't be doing anything to damage that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Kassie, this clearly has no long-term benefits. In a global economy those who want to be "independent" fail. In the short-term we would create more jobs, stimulate the economy, and run into inflated prices. This can be maintained if we keep our eyes on the future and on getting back into the global economy, but if we don't focus on this then we will fall victim to our own arrogance and lack of cash flow.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that if we do this it could cause a global effect. Thiscould turn out to be history repeating its self back before world war two, nations across the world had bad economies. This lead the U.S. to be more independent on its own goods, because those countries could not buy our goods. We ran into inflation and to many goods for our own good. leading to a recession just like today

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with tim that American citicens and the government to stay the course. Even in rough times, because a global economy is better than a self more independent economy.

  41. i think that if you have the money to buy american goods you should but i do understand that the other goods are cheeper but still if you have the money to help america you should. if you dont have the money youshould try to help in a differnt way but still benifical to the US in some way.
