WEEK 2 "A" BLOG

It was reported that Tuesday's inauguration of President Obama may have cost approximately $150 million, making it one of the most expensive ever. In light of today's economic conditions, how do you feel about this? (DUE 1/22)

  1. If our economy is so bad, then why did we spend that much money? As of right now I think it was a waste of money. We could have spent less money on the inauguration, and it could have been just as good. If Obama is a good president, then it was money well spent. But if he isn't, then it was a HUGE waste of money. There are better and more important things to spend money on the that.

  2. I feel that he shouldn't have spent that much because he promised everything to go away or down, and our economy today is not very good. Why couldn't he just have a stand in front of the White House, give a speech and then have Bush give his speech and then hand him the keys. Instead of that much money going into that try having it go to some bank/company who needs it?

  3. I don't think Obama should have spent $150 million because so many other things could have benefitted from that money. Obama should have started off his presidential reign by trying to help the economy not put us in bigger debt.

  4. $150 million dollars does seem like an obscene amount of money, but in comparison to the 9 trillion dollars of debt we have accumulated as a country, it doesn't seem like it's that obscene. One has to remember that much of that $150 million dollars was to provide security for those at the inauguration and I'm assuming for broadcasting. It takes a lot of money to put on a production,if it would've been a concert for some superstar no one would've raised an eyebrow. I'm not saying I agree with it, but I think there are other things to worry about other than how much was spent on his inauguration... what about him pulling the troops out of Iraq on the 16-month plan? How's that going to work? That's more important to me than this subject.

  5. With the economy being as bad as it is right now there is no need to be spending that much money on a celebration of another man taking office just as 43 have before him. Just because he is the first African-American to become president doesn't mean that he is worth more money than any of the previous president.

  6. I feel that it was unecessary for him to spend $150 million. With the way the economy is today, we could have used that money for several other things. Even though he is the first African American president does not mean that he should get any kind of special treatment because there have been many other great presidents come through before him.

  7. The whole time Obama was talking about change. He was saying that we would change the way we are spending our money. Then he goes and spends 150 million dollars on the inauguration. I think it was a bad idea to spend that much money. They could of used it for a better cause.

  8. I feel it is unnecessary to spend $150 million on the inauguration. With the current economic crisis we are in, I feel that money could have gone to a better cause. Obama is always talking about change, and his first move as president, I think he should have started working on the economy. That amount of money just seems unreasonable to me.

  9. I think that Obamas inauguration was way over the top. 150 million dollars is way too much to spend all in one day especially with our economy as bad as it is. From now on I definetely think there should be a budget for the future president.

  10. I don't think that they should have spent that much money on everything. They could have used the money in better ways like to help the economy. They did not need to spend that much money they should have spent money on the things that were needed. They could probably have found a coulple of things that they did not need to spend money on.

  11. Obama is our new president. He can spend as much of his own money as he wants. As long as the event was not paid for with tax money then i am fine with any amount he spends. Just because the economy is bad does not mean that rich people cannot spend their money.

  12. How will Obama help out our economy by spending 150 million for his inauguration? To start off his presidency, there was know need for that amount of money. Shouldn't he be an avocate for cutting back on expenses that don't need to be that great? I know that most of the money was spent for security and that is reasonable, but 150 million is a pretty large amount of money to be spent. Just because he is the first african american president doesnt mean he needs to top every other presidents inaugerations costs. This money should be spent to better our economy.

  13. In my opinion I do not think that it is a big deal that the inaguration cost 150 Mill. He is the first african american president that this nation has ever had, so if spends a little more then what was expected, who really cares. They are giving out raises to people that work on Wall Street, thats worse then our new President spending 150 Mill.

  14. They shouldn't have spent that much money on Obama's inauguration. Obama talked about the poor economic conditions in his speech. He should have dulled down his inauguration and used some of that money to help the economy out.

  15. With a country as big as the United States, 150 million could barely make a dent to help our economy in the current crisis. I believe the costs were necessary and helped create a better celebration for one of the greatest days in history.

  16. I feel that a $150 million was a little too much for the whole inauguration. It would not have been to difficult to still be able to have the inauguration in a less expensive way. Our economy cannot afford to have millions of dollars being spent. Even though a $150 million doesn't seem like much compared to our national debt that we face, every little bit of money saved can help.

  17. I think that bush and obama could have done more to lower the cost of the inaguration. But having such a rich country it wont hurt the economy to much. It also helped to bring people together so in a way it benefited the country.

  18. $150 million dollars is a lot of money to spend on a single day, but not all of the money was provided by the government. Although I think the price tag is a little steep, this inauguration required more money because, with an higher security threat than years passed, more money was spent on insuring the safety of those in attendance. With such an historic inauguration, I think a true celebration was required regardless of the cost.

  19. I do not think that it was appropriate to spend this much money on the inauguration. It was a bad example to the rest of the country spending money where it does not need to be spent. However, I do think that it was necessary for there to be more money spent than usual because of the extra security needed due to all of the crazies and their ridiculous threats. Moreover, I don't think that Obama asked that this much money be spent on him. Once again, the spending of so much money just kind of happened without much thought similar to the way money is spent thoughtlessly in the lives of many Americans. Moreover, similar to the way that American citizens will, the governmental spending of this event will eventually catch up with them and they will have to pay for their spending.

  20. I feel that it was a waste of money but at the same time wonders what they could have cut back on. It did not seem like they had that much and if money is so important to the government maybe we should rethink some of the government salaries. Maybe the presidents pension plan that gives him 100k each year. I think that it should have cost a little less though.

  22. With the high secruity risk and broadcasting, I understand how $150 million came into play. I still believe though that immense amount of money spent on that single day is hypocrytical to his preachings about "Change". If much more thought was actually put into the budget of the inauguration, maybe the price tag wouldn't be so high.

  23. I think it's ridiculous that such a large amount of money was wasted for a "party/gathering" for Obama. Whether it was extravagant or not, people still would have watched it and enjoyed. It seems silly that we put so much effort, time, and money on things that don't even require such large amounts. That money could have been put to use towards the actual issues rather than spent just so we could hear what he WANTED to do. Rather than saying it, he could have showed everybody by putting the money to good use.

  24. I feel like it wasn't worth the fuss. Yeah he's the first half black president and we should do something special for him, but it shouldn't cost that much money. We could have used that money for things that were way more important.

  25. I understand that extra security was needed because of Obama being our first African American president, but I still don't approve of all that money being spent. They were threats made that required a great amount of security, which was what a large portion of the money was spent on, but I still think $150 million is a little too high. With Obama talking so much about how we need to change our economy, I think he should have started out by not spending so much on the inauguration. It was a bad example for the country.

  26. It's politics. For those of you who haven't been paying attention for the past few years, the economic state doesn't matter to these aristocrats. It's not their money that they're wasting. It's not that Obama is too "liberal," it's that he's a politician and is, therefore, expected to waste all of our money.
