OPEC has announced that they will be cutting back on production of oil, thus slashing the supply that is available. The reason for doing this is because of the fact that, due to the economy, demand has shrunk as more and more people have turned to carpooling and public modes of transportation.
With this being the case, should our thoughts on things like conservation and the development of new energy sources be altered? Should we continue to spend as much money on developing things like more fuel-efficient engines, or should that money be spent in other ways to more immediately impact the lagging economy? (due 3/13)

I believe that we should should start looking into different energy sources. We must use the "quick fix" right now, like OPEC oil though.
ReplyDeleteEventually we will run out of natual fuel resources. When that time comes we need to have an alternative. Devote some money to exploring the idea, and when the time comes, we will use it.
If this is going to happen then gas will go back up to 3 dollars a gallon, the country will be mad the only plus side is when people do buy gas the government will get some of the money to lead us out of the hole we are in. We will need conserve it, in order to keep the gas prices where it is.
ReplyDeleteI think we should continue to work on alternative energy sources and conserving oil even though the economy is lagging. Once the economy has rebounded we will still need more energy efficient cars. If cars are more energy efficient, more people are likely to buy them which would help the withering car industry.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kirkhoff that right now we need to use oil since alternative energy sources will take years to mass produce. We need to actively work towards finding alternative energy methods so that we can one day no longer depend on foreign oil.
ReplyDeleteAbove all else we have to keep in mind the jobs that we've lost due to oil consumption. It's extremely easy and cheap to get oil from overseas and once the market for gasoline drops, we lose the insignificant number of jobs that OPEC and its affiliates brought to this nation to begin with. If we started focusing on solar/wind/geothermal sources of power, we could very easily create millions of American jobs that would help rebound the economy better than any stimulus check.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Jenny that the only way to save America's auto manufacturers is to almost force them into better business habits. If they work on building more fuel efficient cars, their industry may actually stand a chance of surviving this recession and prospering further once our economy is thriving again.
ReplyDeleteI think we should continue to try and develop new energy sources. Even though our economy is bad, we will eventually need different energy sources. Our supply of oil will run out, and we as Americans will need to have another option, seeing as how we use so much energy. It would be worse to find ourselves without any power in a few years than to struggle a little in our economy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tim. Finding alternate energy sources would bring more work back to the American people and help our economy. It would be taking power out of foreign hands.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should continue to search for alternitive fuel sources but i don't want to see gas prices go up again it is unreasonable to pay 3 dollors a gallon for gas.
ReplyDeleteI agree with tim as well the continued research will bring more jobs to the people which will help the economy.
ReplyDeleteI think we should still search for alternative sources. I'm sure there are better ways to use fuel sources, cheaper ways too. With then cutting down on the fuel, will help everyone to save more money on that because many more people will start to carpool places, or maybe even walk to close places when its warm.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Pat. When we end up using all of our natural fuel resources, what will we do? That's why we need to start searching for an alternative now. We need to start looking for an alternative so that we have something to rely on whenever we do end up running out of natural fuel resources.
ReplyDeleteYes, we need to find other sources. We can't depend on other countries for oil. When OPEC reduces the supply, gas prices will probably go up because the demand will greater than the supply. I think we should spend money on fuel-efficient engines and by doing this we should be able to create more jobs to help the economy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kirkhoff. We should find ohter sources. He has a good idea. We may run out of natural fuel resourses so its good to have a back up plan.
ReplyDeleteI think we should still save some money for more fuel efficient cars but we should put the brunt of the money into improving the economy. If we start improving the economy today then we don't have to wait until 2010 or 2011 for the economic stimulus plan to kick in.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kirkhoff because we do need to look for the "quick fix". We also need to come up with alternative fuels for when our natural gas runs out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Pat we need extra resources for fuel, Obama said he'd find a new fuel to run america. Even though it has only been 2-3 months the market will keep off the subject. We can't rely on the president to to do this we need to have people to discover a new resource for fuel.
ReplyDeleteI feel we need a "quick fix". Once we do this we can look for better alternitives. For now we should just fix the problem before it gets anyworse. With our economy being as bad as it is, people arent going to want to buy new cars. We need the cheapest and most affordible way to solve this problem and a "quick fix"; for now is all we can do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with jessica. Our supply of oil will run out and we will have to find a new source. This source will have to be affordable, and have a large supply. If it doesnt have a large supply then it wont help us for that long. We need to keep an eye out for a new alternative, becauses thats really all we can do.
ReplyDeleteWe should keep working on new energy sources because in the future it could help us. Right now the economy is not getting better even with the Stimulus package. Money is not the answer right now.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jessica that if we run out of oil we are in trouble. We are dependent on oil. If we run out of oil we will not be able to do a lot of things.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the money should be put in to making the economy better. We might take a hit in the long run, but it can't be anywhere near as bad as it is now. People need money, they don't need to see that money wasted on things like alternative oil. Yes thoes are all good things, but we have to look at what is going on right now, and there are people out there that can't pay their bills.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Reis, we don't need to focus on the future right now. Maybe when we get this economy situation figured out, then we should look into alternative fuels. Right now though, people need money so they can pay bills and put food on the table.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should still try to come up with different energy sources. We shouldn't give up on what we have already started because of less oil demand. People are just trying to save money at the time, so we should start other energy source options. If we could come up with a new source, then we can save money in the future.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anna we need to find other fuel sources. There are probably cheaper and better for the environment fuel sources out there. By carpooling and walking places, this will save money for people and families. We need to take the oil production decrease and invest our money into other fuel sources.
ReplyDeleteI think we need to focus on coming up with different energy sources. Our supply of oil will eventually run out and what will we do then? Even though the economys struggling, we need to realize that if we don't take action now, it could be worse for us in the long run that just some struggling right now.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should start to look for other options because the prices for oil will shoot back up sometime in the near future. With the economy as it is, we should do everything we can to cut back and try not to waste money. Looking for other energy sources would be a wise decision to make because we will have to find something other than oil in the future anyway.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brittany. Taking action now will save money in the future. We need to start finding other energy sources. I also agree with Jessica when she says that one day our supply of oil will run out and that were going to need an alternative.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brittany. We do need to find another source of energy because this will help us out in the long run. Thier are other sources out there that are much cheaper and that are more abundant in quantity for our own nation.
ReplyDeleteI think that they should be altered a little bit. I think we should try to help the economy and then the work on the more fuel efficient engines. They need to help with the economy and then they can go back to working with trying to find other fuel efficient engines.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Abby that we should spend money on trying to find other sources. The oil will run out sometime. I still think that we need to try to help the economy. Then once the economy is in better shape we can go back to looking for other sources.
ReplyDeleteI think that we still need to continue to spend money on looking for other means of energy. In the long run, this will help us out more and save us more money. We need to look to the future instead of just living only in the present. There are future generations to look out for. After all, we are a nation founded on the believes of looking out for our posterity.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenny. What will happen once the recession is over? The answer to that is that we will still need to look for alternative energy sources. It would be irresponsible for the U.S. to stop spending money on such an important part of our future. Cutting money from this would be like disregarding our future needs.
ReplyDeleteI think we should look to new alternative resources. If we do find another resource it will be environentally healthy and will be cheaper to buy. Gas prices are way too high for the economy right now. Looking for alternative resources right now will help us in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenny we should look for alternative resoruces. Making a car that is more efficient will help protect the enviroment and help the economy out by cutting costs of fuel. It will also give car manufacturerers a new car to sell on the market, so they might be saved from bankrupcy and at the same time create more jobs.
ReplyDeleteI think we should continue to spend money on developing things like more fuel-efficient engines because they are going to be necessary in the future. Eventually the oil is going to be used up and then what? We're going to need something to turn to and use after gas. It's not a terrible thing that people are beginning to carpool, in fact it even helps the environment. I think people will continue to carpool and not spend money on gas as long as necessary. It's not hurting anyone to carpool, so why not use the money for future sources?
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Austin. Although the economy was at it's worst, I think it's beginning to improve and slowly get back on track. This happened without the cutback on energy source funds. I don't think the money going towards these energy sources is wasted at all. In fact, I think it's our best option because eventually, we won't need to buy gas at all. Therefore, us cutting back on it is a gradual step to not using it at all. Also, regardless of the state of the economy, there are always going to be people who can't pay their bills anyways.
ReplyDeleteI believe we should continue to search for alternate sources. Our economy wont be this bad for much longer. Once we get out, our dependence for oil will be back. Alternate sources will not only save money but also stop the reliance on foreign countries. Eventually a country will find an alternate source. We need to be the first.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jessica. If the government searches for more alternatives, there will be more job opportunities in the United States. Right now foreign countries are receiving our business. With alternate fuel made in our own country, prices of fuel will be cheaper and the economy will be better. Also, it will stop out dependence on foreign countries.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should continue looking into alternative fuel sources. If we start pooling money from other places like the alternative fuel fund then it will be hard to go back to it. Someday we will need the alternative fuel and we should find it sooner than later.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kirkhoff. We must still put money into alternative fuels. When the time is right we will use it. It is not like we are just wasting the money. We are putting it to a good use. Someday we will be thankful we put so much time and money into creating a alternative fuel source.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should invest in looking for alternative energy sources, but at the same time attempt to conserve some of the funding. Hopefully our economy will only be in recession for not too much longer, but if it is we still need the remains of that funding to rely back on. On the other hand, finding and investing in other energy sources will cut our dependence on foreign countries in half, benefiting ourselves in many substantial ways.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kassie on if the US searches for alternative sources, more job opportunites would surface. Like she said, fellow nations our recieving our business, but with the developement of our alternate sources, the soaring prices would decrease, benefiting our unstabble economy.
ReplyDeletei think that the focas should still be on the new ways to improve fuel and electric cars. if we turn our focas to the economy the prices will sneek back up on us and then we will be putting extra money into the improvment and it will just make it a bigger problem then. if we can improve and the eficence of the fuel we need to do that because we are running out of resources and we need to find new ways to deal with this problem and it will just make things better if we focas on it now.
ReplyDeletei agree with buckmoney that we need to keep our focas on that because if it starts getting bad again we will have trouble getting back in the groove and if that is so we might just give up or not even have any money to put into it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that money should be invested in developing new modes of public transportation. With an increased amount of money for this service, that the city has to provide anyway, it could put more buses on the streets, and more trains on the tracks. This would in turn create local jobs for those who may have recently lost a job. However, if more money was invested in this public service, then just as much money would have to be spent in advertisment.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Hallie. The US must find new ways to feed our "fuel frenzy". Whether it be by improving public transportation or investing in alternative-fuel sources, we must take steps in order to improve our modes of transportation.
ReplyDeleteI think we should continue research on new types of fuel. We need to find a newer and cheaper way to make things. Gas and oil is too much. We must continue to move on with bigger and better things.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Claire. I think we need to keep moving on. Our country spoends way too much money on oil. The quicker we find a new source the better off we will be.
ReplyDeleteI believe that money should still be spent on making more fuel efficient motors and find new ways to cut gas usage. The less we use the less we hurt the world and our wallets. Costs may be cut on finding more fuel efficient vehicles but it is still necessary for economic efficiency.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Claire. Money should still be invested into more fuel efficient cars rather than other transportation. Although it may create more jobs, it is still burning fuel. This puts money in the pockets of oil people.
