It has been released that the CIA destroyed 92 interrogation tapes of suspected terrorists. Previously, the CIA had admitted to destroying just two.

Do you think that this was done to protect national security or does this admission make you suspicious of what really was on those tapes? Does this hurt our image internationally? Would it have made a difference if the true number was revealed from the beginning? (due 3/10)

I strongly believe it was done for national security. If those terrorists have information then the interregations could have gotten it out of them, it was recorded. Why would the US want to release secure information to the world, that could potentially hurt the US.
ReplyDeleteAlthough i believe it was done for national security, the cia was not to hesitant in destroying them. Under the new Obama adminstration, torture is a no no. I believe they had this in mind when they destroyed them, but national security was the main reason.
ReplyDeleteI think this is just protecting our national security. I don't think it really even affects our national image. It probably would have been beneficial if the real number had been released in the first place because then other countries would not think that we were trying to cover up something.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kirkhoff that one of the reasons they may have destroyed the tapes was because of Obama's rules against torture. Maybe they were just trying to cover their tracks.

ReplyDeleteI think their trying to hide something. I think it’s more suspicious since they lied about it at first. They might be hiding it to protect us though because they didn't want it to get in the wrong hands.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kirkhoff. I think they're doing this to protect us. It would hurt the US if word spread about it. They're thinking about our safty.
ReplyDeleteI think they only destroyed those tapes because they didn't want people to see how they really interrogated the terror suspects. If others countries saw how we treated our detainees it would seriously tarnish our reputation. I think the fact that they lied about the true number of tapes they destroyed makes this worse because it makes people wonder why they lied in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Kirkhoff. I seriously doubt it had to do with national security. They just don't want to be accused of torture, especially since we now have an attorney general that is against torture as a means of interrogation.
ReplyDeleteI think that they want us to think that they did it for National Security reasons. To me, it sends up red flags. I believe they are hiding something from us. I really don't care what they did to the terrorists. As long as we get them then I don't care how they do it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenny. I think they are hiding something. But once again, I don't care. They are trying to kill us. So why can't we torture them? It seems like a good idea to me. If they are going to try to kill me, I would do the same thing
ReplyDeleteThere is absolutely no excuse for the CIA to destroy anything. People are critical of omissions that the CIA has made, imagine the outrage that could spark if they are consistently destroying documents and tapes that could be vital. This is extremely suspicious and we need to make sure that the people who deleted these files lose their jobs for what can only be perceived as a cover up.
ReplyDeleteJenny is right. If this had anything to do with national security, they would just hold the tapes until a later date. The only rational explanation is that they had something to cover up (such as us violating the Geneva conventions). This is definite reason for suspicion and should be investigated as criminal activity.
ReplyDeleteI think there is an excuse of why the CIA destroyed the tapes. It could have had some part of the National Security, but that doesnt mean they have to lie about it. If they first admited to destroying two, ant say it was 92, there has to be a reason behind it. They wouldnt destroy these if they weren't hiding anything. There must be some sourt of reason
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenny, they are hiding this for their own good. They dont want to have their torture to make the news so they just destroyed all the evidence. I think as long as they have this under control we shouldnt worry.
ReplyDeleteI think that this event wont affect the outlook of the U.S. image to bad. There are many countries out there today that have far worse than that goingon. I do believe that this was for national security, information that we have could get out. if that were to happen then that could potentally, hurt the U.S. far worse.
ReplyDeleteI agree with katie word getting out about some evidence givinupby terrorist could hurt us greatly. The image of the country went down a little, but it could be far worse if someone found the video that they destroyed.
ReplyDeleteI believe that these tapes were destroyed because of National Security. I believe this because I think that they were just trying to keep quiet any information that would frighten some people in the US and things that people did not need to know. I do not think that they were trying to hide the way they interrogate these people at all.
ReplyDeleteI agree with kirkhoff on saying that they are doing this to protect us and that they are looking out for our safety. If people find out about certain things they aren't suppose to then that could hurt our country.
ReplyDeleteI think it was done for national security. It is important to keep interrogations of the United States a secret. If some of the information were to get out it would be dangerous to us. I don't think it hurts are image i believe most people have a good idea of whats going on. No it would not have made a difference if the true number was exposed in the beginning.
ReplyDeleteI agree with fries. We needed to keep it quite. It was important to our security. They were not trying to hide the interrogations because most people already know whats going on.
ReplyDeleteI think the tapes were destroyed to hide what really goes on behind the scenes, not just to protect national security. The fact that they felt it necessary to get rid of the evidence and destroy not one tape, but 92, really makes it suspicious as to what was on them. Also, they lied about it before, as if hey had something to hide. Now that other nations know we lied and destroyed that many tapes, they are probably questioning our interrogation methods, demising our reputation.
ReplyDeleteI think there was a reason for the CIA to destroy those tapes. I think they were just doing it for our safety. I would definately want them to destroy anything that would be a danger to us. It's better to destroy them and know that nothing will get out than to take a risk of things maybe getting out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Fries. I think that they were just doing it so that if anyone were to find out something that they wouldn't freak out and tell everyone. So better safe than sorry and destroy them.
ReplyDeleteI think they deleted them to protect the US from terrorists. The way the CIA lied about how many were destroyed seems to make it seem suspicious. I think it kind of makes our nation look bad, but not too bad because its terrorists, not like main ideas. People might have been more accepting if they knew the truth all along, instead of the numbers drastically changing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Fries, i think they told the truth, so the US will not freak out if anything drastic would occur. Letting the people know slowly is probably a good thing because some people would handle it badly. They were just trying to hide these for security purposes.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think the CIA destroying the not one, but 92 interrogation tapes was extremely suspicious. Why even destroy them in the first place? There was obviously some wrongful acts of torture that we must conceal in order to protect our highly respected reputation.
ReplyDeleteI think that they were destroyed to protect national security. I do feel a little suspicious of what was really on those tapes. I think that it will hurt us internationally. The other countries will see this and maybe wonder why they destroyed 92 of them. I think it would have made a difference. This makes it look like they were trying to hide it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Anna said that if they needed to be destroyed then they should have been. Like she said it is better that the stuff was destroyed then get out. If they were to get out they could put people in danger.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hickle, if this was a matter of our National security, then I'm sure they could just keep the tapes until a later date. The CIA really does not have a legitament reason why so many tapes were destroyed, besides the fact that those tapes possessed something that the public would be extremely ashamed of.
ReplyDeleteI believe that it was their chose to destroy the tapes. WE can't make accusations that they were torturing criminals. We need to stand behind our government, not critisize them for every thing they do. They probably had a good reason to get rid of the tapes. Nobody knows the real reason for sure.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Derick, I believe that the government to the right step in destroying the tapes. We need to back them on their decision. We shouldn't be questioning what there doing but rathering helping them. They have saved many American lives and they don't deserve us looking down on them.
ReplyDeletei think that those tapes might have stuff that they are trying to hide but the way i see it is that they are are trying to protect our homeland i agree with the way they are acting. i think that it is the best way to go about this. if we had somethin that big to hide the public would have not found out that they had even got rid of them so they must not of had that much bad stuff on them or we wouldnt be discussing this right now.
ReplyDeletei agree with greg because they were trying to keep us safe. i think he is right that there is nothing to worry about with these tapes. if there is somthing to hide they would have not let it be known that they were even around.
ReplyDeleteOur CIA acts in our best interests. If those tapes were deemed necessary to destroy, there was a reason it had to be done. What I would like to know is, how did the media/public hear about the destroying of these tapes? It is a little suspicious... However, I don't think it was done to cover anything up. If it was, then this scandal will be a huge smudge mark on our cheeks to the rest of the world to see.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anna and Greg. If the content that was on those tapes were to be released, I'm assuming it could put many American lives at risk. Not only American lives, but also those international officials who may have been involved in those tapes. There's so many bad things that would have resulted in the leaking of those tapes... I'm glad they destroyed them.
ReplyDeleteI think the CIA destroyed the tapes because they are afraid that they will be charged as criminals. They probably had video footage of torture that violates the rules and do not want to be caught. It is most likely another cover up to protect themselves.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hallie it is extremely suspicios that they had 92 tapes destroyed. Obama and his new administration is against torture so I think that they are trying destroy anything that would convict them of illegal actions.
ReplyDeleteI think the CIA is doing the right thing. They are well educated and knnow whats best for our country. We dont know all the information behind this either. We need to support out government with whatever they decide because they have the best intrest with us in mind.
ReplyDeleteI dissagree with Elias i dont think they were trying to hide anything. But if they were, the Cia knows whats best for the country and i trust their decisions. I dont belive all the information is out there either. Therefore, i can not assume anything they did was wrong
ReplyDeleteWhy did they detroy them first off? National security? If it's under natinal security it should be protected at all times. Unless the CIA acually beat them. If they had a good explanation then ok.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with kassie they did somthing and they just don't want to release it into the public or who ever the next people to run the CIA are going to watch then explain what went on.
ReplyDeleteI think that destroying the tapes was a cover up but also a matter of national security. The reason will probly never be know but they did for a reason and that is good enough for me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with kassie they know what they're doing, it is all about what is best for the country.
ReplyDeleteI think it is suspicious that 92 tapes were destroyed. I think it looks worse that they lied about the number of tapes destroyed in the first place. I believe they are trying to hide the ways they interrogated terroists, but the CIA knows what's best and so whatever was on those tapes doesn't matter to me. There's a good reason there gone.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kassie. The CIA is doing what they think is best for us. As she said, I also trust them and know that they will do what's in best interest for our country.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Jessica. I think it completely affects our image as a nation because people used to look at us as one of the "good guys" until all of this started and now we just planted more doubt in their minds by acting like we have something to hide. If we just would have revealed the real number in the first place, this wouldn't be an issue, but now those tapes release more suspicion.
ReplyDeleteThis admission makes me suspicious of what was really on those tapes becuase they lied about it. It makes me wonder how many other things they have lied about. I think this could hurt our image internationally because we lied; countries may not want to trust us anymore. Yes I think it would have shown people that we are truthfull.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tim because the CIA has no right to destroy anything. And when they do this it makes it look like cover-up.
ReplyDeleteThere were probably important information on the tapes that the US did not want to get out. It does give us a bad image because we are being secretive and other countries don't like that. They did it because they are making sure nothing gets out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kassie because US is making sure information is not getting out that should not get out. If information gets out it could hurt us.
ReplyDeleteI think that this does hurt our image. When the U.S. isn't forth coming, it only makes people wonder what else we are hiding. Even the littlest white lies can lead to a bad image. This is what the U.S. is doing for itself. We look like we're hiding more from the world.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Abby. I think that whatever was on those tapes was not appropriate. Therefore, they were destroyed. I think that not only do other countries have a right to know what was on those tapes but so do the American people. The destruction of those tapes will only hurt the United States.
ReplyDeleteThe destroying of tapes was probably done to protect the citizens of the USA. These documents may have had classified information that could have effected the lives of americans. The CIA took the necessary steps to protect us. This does not dimenish their rep.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Brianna. The CIA is suppose to be secretive if it is for the best. The tapes should have been destroyed if they could be harmful. We should not question the government. They are all knowing.
